Pier 5 Hotel in Aalborg top-notch experience!
Wow, I have so many great things to say about the Pier 5 Hotel in Aalborg, Denmark, that I honestly don't know if there are enough characters to express it here! The staff to a person were so friendly and helpful and spoke impeccable English. The room was lovely and had a pinpad so you didn't have to carry a room keycard around. The hotel was barely a block from the harbor in a very busy pedestrian corridor and yet offered plenty of free off-street parking. You could easily walk to the pier for sightseeing and people-watching! It had lovely little outdoor courtyards and a splendid light-filled breakfast area/bar. The breakfasts were AMAZING! One unique thing they served on their breakfast smorgasbord was green beans--yes, green beans ("gron bonner" in Danish)! It was pretty simple for them to make (just lightly grilled in a bit of oil and sea salt, they told me when I asked) and actually really delicious and refreshing! Sneaky way to jumpstart your day with some greens! Yum-O! Another thing they offered that I have never seen anywhere else was a "Vitamin bar" ("Good for you") with a wide assortment of vitamins, just in case you forgot to pack yours before you left home! LOL! It offered things like Magnesium, B, a multivitamin, fish oil, etc. Yum! Dig in! Ha ha! But it was very thoughtful. The only hiccup was that apparently our travel agent had booked our rooms on a third-party provider's website that did not include the breakfasts but we paid for them out of pocket anyway and were so glad we did. I also enjoyed a draft Carlsberg beer in the same lobby area one evening, and meanwhile they were having a large party in the courtyard celebrating their airport! I didn't even know Aalborg had an airport! Needless to say, if I ever return to Aalborg--and I wish and hope I do some day--I will definitely book the Pier 5 Hotel again!

Tired and dissapointed
Nice lounge, nice room, satisfactory breakfast… and here comes the big “but”!
I chose a good hotel specifically to make sure I would get a comfortable bed. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the one thing, and arguably the most important thing, the hotel failed to deliver.
First of all, the bed was hard. The duvet cover was heavy and scratchy, almost like sleeping under a tea towel, and the pillow was completely worn out. It felt like seven small clumps of cotton had been thrown into a fabric bag. Your head simply sank straight through it, basically a pillow without any actual pillow.
I really did not sleep well, and at these prices, a comfortable bed is surely the very least you should be able to expect.
At that point, I honestly do not care whether the hotel has Arne Jacobsen chairs or smiling staff in the lobby. If the most fundamental purpose of a hotel, namely getting a good night’s sleep, does not work, then all the decoration and design details become irrelevant.
A serious disappointment.

Great front of house staff. Unfortunately we arrived late and found it very difficult to park near to the hotel. The room was also very hot, with more air circulation despite the windows being opened all night and the fan being on. To compound matters, our window opened out on to the main road and I’m afraid the bed was very firm. We carried in additional bedding from the car (memory foam mattress), but given we couldn’t park near it was a bit of a mission.
