"Out of time" and adorable
Everything was perfect: the proximity to Harlingen (starting port for the Wadden Islands), the picturesque little village, the quiet, the breakfast ... and the charming Welcoming of Gildou!
In short, an "out of time" experience that marked our stay in the Netherlands.

A warm bath in Friesland
Because how cool is it if you are already running your own hotel at this age. We think so. That a grandfather calls his granddaughter, who has completed higher hotel school, to tell him that the hotel in the village (Kimswerd) is for sale... and so it happened.
I had driven past Kimswerd before for work, but never thought I would sleep there. That is completely different for us now. For our tour through NL we were looking for several nice places to stay. And so my wife came up with De Greate Pier via social media. Looked nice, so book it.
For us it already started when we entered the village. Nice houses and a friendly atmosphere. And then suddenly on the left is Herberg De Greate Pier. From the outside it is already a picture and you can also park your car in front of the door for free. That is different from a day ticket for 27.50 in Maastricht.
Upon arrival we were immediately welcomed by the owner. Oh yes, she had also called in advance to tell us approximately what time we would arrive. I like that. We experienced the personal all the time.
There are 6 hotel rooms and a small restaurant downstairs with a modest but good menu. I love that. Not too difficult, not too much, just good.
All rooms are decorated with a personal touch, you can see and feel that.
We had dinner in the restaurant in the evening. Since we love shared dining, we opted for an antipasti platter, a small burrata salad and a Pier pizza (how could it be otherwise) to share. Oh yes, if you can also have a Frysk Hynder (for the whiskey lover) as an aperitif, you will score even more bonus points. The food was more than good. The setting of the restaurant feels like a large living room. The other guests still greet each other and it all feels like a warm bath. Nice and casual. The owner came by every now and then for a chat. Her story, passion and interaction with people make Herberg De Greate Pier a special place for us in the Netherlands. And that is quite special.
I (we) hope to come back here again. At a different time of year (the stories about that made me very enthusiastic) or just again when you want to get away from it all.
Grutte Pier was known for fighting the Dutch, but as Dutch people we feel very welcome at Hergerg De Greate Pier.

Definitely recommended, also to use as a stepping stone to the islands.
The breakfast was very extensive and presented in a fun and special way, the rooms all have their own theme, very nice.
