I did the ATM cave tour through Yellow Belly Backpackers. My guide Reyes was phenomenal! He handled the tour with so much patience and enthusiasm and truly made the experience unforgettable. He was very thorough and was excited to answer any questions that I had. He was also very cautious with my safety, but also ensured I was getting a fun adventure. I would highly recommend this tour. Thank you so much Reyes!

Hostel is great / Beware of the tour guide
I had a very good experience with the hostel itself – the staff was friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and everything was well organized.
However, I want to specifically review the from the hostel offered ATM cave tour by the guide, Damien, as this experience did not meet expectations overall.
The tour started early at 7:00 AM, which I actually appreciated because it meant fewer crowds and better water conditions inside the cave.
Unfortunately, the driving was very concerning. Damien drove extremely fast, both on paved roads and on rough gravel roads. More importantly, he was repeatedly texting while driving with three guests in the vehicle. After the third time this happened, I kindly asked him to stop, as it felt unsafe and dangerous. This significantly affected my sense of safety during the trip.
The walk through the jungle was also problematic. Damien set a very fast pace and showed little consideration for the group in terms of speed. While he did provide some explanations along the way, the overall experience felt rushed and not very attentive to the participants.
That being said, inside the cave itself, the experience was very good. Damien was clearly focused on safety and provided many explanations, and I have no complaints about this part of the tour.
Another issue was communication after the tour. Since cameras are not allowed inside the cave, I asked if he could share photos from previous tours via WhatsApp. Although this seemed possible, I never received them, while other participants in the group did.
To be clear: the cave itself is absolutely worth visiting, and the hostel is great. However, the guiding outside the cave and especially the driving behavior made this tour less enjoyable and, at times, uncomfortable.
I hope this feedback helps improve safety and overall experience for future guests.

Yellow Belly Backpackers Hostel Review
We stayed for 3 nights during our trip in Belize, really nice hostle, clean and great breakfast included. Staff were friendly and helpful for organisong tours and laundry.
Had a great tour of the ATM Caves with Reyes! He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Mayan history and culture. He even wrote and drew our names in Mayan, which was such a special and personal touch. It was my favorite memento from our trip to Belize and something I’ll treasure for years to come. Highly recommend Reyes for an unforgettable experience!
The owner of the hostel Bubbles is also extremely friendly and helpful which also added immensely to the over experience of staying at the Yellow Belly Backpackers Hostel!
Had a great tour of the ATM Caves with Reyes! He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Mayan history and culture. He even wrote and drew our names in Mayan, which was such a special and personal touch. It was my favorite memento from our trip to Belize and something I’ll treasure for years to come. Great experience on the ATM cave tour
I would highly recommend the ATM cave tour with Reyes from Mayan Adventure Travel. We booked the tour through the YBB hostel and were lucky enough to have Reyes as our guide. He’s so enthousiast, passionate and extremely knowledgeable not only about the history of the cave and the artifacts within it, but also about Mayan culture in general and Belize as a country. We truly learned a lot, had so much fun exploring the cave, and got great recommendations for other things to do/visit in Belize. And Reyes also makes sure the entire adventure through the cave is safe and comfortable for everyone, and we also really appreciate how he takes care that the cave, artifacts and surrounding nature are conserved and treated with respect. Definitely a must do activity in San Ignacio!!

Female travelers beware
I stayed at this hostel with my daughter during January 2025 for the purpose of vetting it for my study abroad program. From my experience the rooms were great for the price, the tours to MPR and Xunantunich were in-house, and the location was nice. However, when I brought my 14 students this January 2026, their experience was filled with challenges due to Bubbles and others associated with him making unwanted and repeated advances on several of the female participants. Students said that Bubbles was hovering by the shower door when they came out, knocking on their door when they were dressing, and attempting to lure them into his room. He was also providing them free drinks at the bar. Other reviews have described similar instances. Please, if you are a young female or if you are a coordinator for student groups, take this review and other reviews like it seriously and plan accordingly. I will not be bringing students to this hostel again.
