Beautiful ryokan, great food, pure serenity

We loved our short stay at Shitanda. We were the only guests that night and had the beautiful Onsen all to ourselves and could use it as a family. The house and garden are fantastically maintained and the surrounding rice fields give it such a rural and serene atmosphere. We booked dinner as well and were extremely pleased with the many different tasty dishes that were served to us by a lovely lady in a kimono. Definitely recommend this place if you are visiting Takayama, it is a nice contrast to the rather touristy and busy city center.

Peaceful and Friendly

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights and really enjoyed the experience of staying in a traditional inn. After booking, we received an email from the innkeeper asking when we wanted to be picked up from the train station. He brought us to and from the town each day in a van, so we didn't need a car. He was very friendly, spoke great English, and could answer lots of questions about the area. When serving the delicious breakfasts/dinners, he would explain what each dish was and where it came from. The meals changed each day and were based on the season. We had some delicious Hida beef both nights and a variety of other local dishes. He also recommended a really good local sake to have with dinner one night, and it only cost a few dollars more.
The room was on the second floor and had a nice view of the garden and pond (be on the lookout for the golden fish). The futons and yukatas were comfortable and warm. Green tea, hot water, and a TV in the room. Since we were the only guests there at the time, my wife and I could use the same hot bath together. Soaking in the bath was a great way to relax after walking around town all day.

Relaxed and attentive

We stayed for two nights - we got picked up from the station, ferried to and from Takayama and cycled around the local area which is very pretty. The dinner is superb, over ten dishes perhaps, well worth having. Lovely old building, particularly if like us you have the bedroom next to the garden and pond. Thank you!

Really nice Ryokan

Location; 10 minutes drive from train station. The ryokan provide shutlle to pick up and drop off. Really nice area and peaceful.
Wifi; working really good
Staff; only one person speak english, but he was really friend and helpful.
Room; vig and confortable futons
Onsen; was really good
Breakfast and Dinner; you must need to book the ryokan with half board. It was amazing everything.
We had a wonderful one-night stay at Shitanda.

Loved this inn!

A traditional ryokan some 5 km from Takayama, in a wonderful wooden home. Takeshi, the owner, can speak a good English and is very forthcoming.
And yes, I saw the kamoshika (wild Japanese goat) and took a picture of it. It was right behind the inn, a bit further uphill (some 100 meters).
