Absolutely wonderful place!
We arranged transport from the airport through the riad, and our driver was waiting for us once we emerged with our baggage (look outside – we didn’t see a sign for us among the drivers waiting inside the arrivals hall but soon discovered another group just outside the doors). He brought us to the outskirts of the medina and transferred our luggage to a wagon that another man wheeled through the busy streets for the ~10 minute walk to the riad.
Riad Azra was perfectly situated, right off Jemaa el-Fnaa, but just down a quiet, charming alley that separated it from the medina bustle. We made note of landmarks near the alley and never had trouble finding it. Later in our visit to Morocco, we stayed at a different riad only one street away, and it somehow felt like a different world given how much more touristy its location was – Riad Azra offered a much better exterior atmosphere (and a particularly adorable batch of alley cats). Staff was always quick to answer knocks to let us back into the riad even late into the night, given that guests are not generally provided with main door keys to the medina riads.
We were greeted by a friendly hostess who offered us mint tea, a map, and some tips of highlights to see. She also enthusiastically answered our super important question about directions to the olive souk, which turned out to be very near. :) We were then shown to our “comfort triple” room, the Menara, which was located on the main floor adjacent to the lobby. We initially worried this would mean a lot of noise, but we never heard any. We also initially worried that we would swelter given that temps were in the 90s outside and the room was extremely hot…but the A/C unit was incredibly efficient and nearly instantly cooled the room.
The room was spacious and well laid out, with a wardrobe, desk, and plenty of floor space for luggage. Mattresses were a bit firm for our preferences, but my understanding is that’s the norm in Morocco (and was certainly what we encountered in nearly all of the properties we stayed at on this trip). The bathroom was also spacious, and the shower worked well. Everything was extremely clean.
In regards to common areas, there was a cozy covered lounge area with a plunge pool on the upper level and an airy rooftop terrace above where we had breakfast. We only ate breakfast one morning (we had to leave before the start time of 8 am on the second morning) so can’t speak to any day-to-day variation, but the meal we were served could certainly be accurately described as a feast. There were so many delicious pastries, breads, olives, jams, etc. along with fresh orange juice and a big pot of mint tea. The terrace didn’t look out over much of anything and was instead a peaceful spot one would never guess was in the middle of a bustling medina.
Ultimately, we were sad to leave after only a two-night stay. Riad Azra was definitely the kind of place I’d love to return to for a week or longer as a cozy, perfectly-situated base for a more leisurely Marrakech visit. Don’t hesitate to book this one!
