Nice hotel, near the beach, but room to improve

The room was clean and well presented, although the décor is beginning to feel rather dated and could certainly benefit from some refurbishment.
Breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay. There was an impressive variety of options, both continental and English, with a particularly good selection of fresh fruit. There was certainly no shortage of choice to start the day.
The check-out, however, was quite another matter. There was no facility simply to leave the RFID room cards, so we were required to queue at reception in order to hand them back. When I questioned this rather unusual arrangement, I was simply told, in effect, that “this is how it is”. When I tried to explain my surprise and respond, I was actually told to be quiet and listen.
Being told to “be quiet and listen” by a member of hotel reception is hardly what one expects at the end of a stay, and certainly not the sort of farewell one would associate with good hospitality. I found the whole exchange unnecessarily rude and dismissive. A simple explanation and a little courtesy would have been more than sufficient.
It is a pity, as the hotel has a very good location. The beach is within easy reach, with wonderfully clear water and very pleasant sea temperatures, and the hotel is also conveniently situated for the ferry port to Portsmouth.
Overall, the Santemar has some very good qualities, particularly its location and excellent breakfast. The rather old-fashioned décor is forgivable; an old-fashioned approach to customer service is somewhat less so. One would hope that a hotel of this standard could manage a simple check-out without making a departing guest feel that asking a perfectly reasonable question is somehow an inconvenience.

Loved the location of this hotel. Beach is within a couple minutes walk, also there are some great restaurants and coffee nearby. It’s also really close to the tunnel to walk into the city center. The staff were very kind and helpful as well.

I would not return

Hotel too big for what we are used to. In the room, the air conditioning worked very poorly, the bathroom needs a renovation, a shower tray is missing, at this point, getting into a bathtub is reckless. At breakfast, you either heat the milk for the coffee in a microwave or get it from a machine, which is neither milk nor anything else. The reception staff was quite serious, bordering on unfriendly. The best part, the room door locking system.

Reception staff excellent. Check in quick and we loved the room upgrade to water view - stunning. Recommend other travellers pay the extra to get a water view room on a high floor. Room well equipped and very comfortable. Relax lounges (two) were lovely to meet others or read. Would definitely return.

good location, abusive prices

The location is excellent, just 3 minutes from Sardinero beach. The housekeeping and cleaning service is fantastic; they leave the room spotless. The food service at the restaurant and café is terrible, and the prices are an insult for that quality of food.
The water from the shower and sink comes out with very low pressure, and after speaking with the receptionist, it turns out this happens in all the rooms, so it can take ages to rinse your hair in the shower.
Moreover, it is worth noting that the prices are abusive for what is offered.
